Presenter: Letha Barnes, Director The Career Institute - Letha Barnes began in the cosmetology industry in 1966. She was appointed Director of Milady's Career Institute in January 2000, at which time she still served as President of Olympus, Inc. which operated two cosmetology schools in New Mexico. Beginning in January of 2001, she has been able to dedicate herself full-time to her personal mission of improving the quality of cosmetology education through her role as Director of The Career Institute.

Barnes began serving as a Director of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) in 1992, Historian in 1993, and President from 1994 to 1996. As President of AACS, she was highly instrumental in reviving and expanding the mission of the educational committee, Cosmetology Educators of America (CEA). She also served as Chairman of the Accreditation and CEA committees for two years and has been an active member of the Finance, By-laws, and Government Relations committees. She was appointed under three different governors to the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, for which she filled either the position of Vice-Chairman or Chairman in her ten years of service to the State of New Mexico. In 1994, she was granted the designation of Nationally Certified Cosmetology Examiner by the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology, Inc. She was the first educator in the United States to be awarded the distinction of Skills Assessor by the City and Guild of London Institute and by NACCAS. The Career Colleges and Schools of Texas recognized Barnes in 1995 for her Outstanding Service to the Proprietary Sector of Education. She was also the recipient of the AACS Outstanding Person of the Year Award. In 1997, she received a Special Recognition Award for her contribution to cosmetology education and an Award of Distinction for her lifetime contribution to cosmetology education. Her most recent recognition is that of being selected by her peers to receive the N. F. Cimaglia Award in 2001 for her outstanding performance and service to the cosmetology schools of America.
