Milady’s Career Institute
is very pleased and excited to partner
with NACCAS at their April Accreditation
Workshop! The topic being offered
is entitled “Student Evaluation
and Testing Methods” one topic,
amongst many, available within the
very popular and highly demanded Master
Educator Series!
Master Educator Series: These
programs offer educators the opportunity
to become certified by The Career
Institute as a Master Educator. Attendees
will receive a certificate for each
module completed as well as a special
recognition after completing 12 of
the 18 units of study available through
Level I and Level II of the program.
The units can be completed in any
order and within any time frame. Directors,
Educators, and Teacher Trainees wanting
to expand and improve their basic
teaching skills, and have fun while
doing so, are encouraged to attend.
Topic: Student Evaluation
and Testing Methods - Learn valuable
methods used in evaluating and grading
learner knowledge, performance, and
behavior. The program will discuss
what to grade and when to grade and
reviews sample grading procedures.
Participants will discover characteristics
of different grading styles, including:
Grading by disposition, Grading with
spite, Grading by personal fetish,
Grading without risk, Grading by assumption,
Grading in absentia, Grading improvement
only, Grading with warm fuzzies. The
importance of creating a test plan,
test creation, the development of
performance evaluation tools, and
grading scales will also be reviewed.
This program will aid educators in
developing measurement criteria that
reduce or eliminate subjectivity and
focus on specific knowledge or skills
abilities desired in student behavior.
Presenter: Letha Barnes, Director
The Career Institute - Letha Barnes
began in the cosmetology industry
in 1966. She was appointed Director
of Milady's Career Institute in January
2000, at which time she still served
as President of Olympus, Inc. which
operated two cosmetology schools in
New Mexico. Beginning in January of
2001, she has been able to dedicate
herself full-time to her personal
mission of improving the quality of
cosmetology education through her
role as Director of The Career Institute.
Barnes began serving as a Director
of the American Association of Cosmetology
Schools (AACS) in 1992, Historian
in 1993, and President from 1994 to
1996. As President of AACS, she was
highly instrumental in reviving and
expanding the mission of the educational
committee, Cosmetology Educators of
America (CEA). She also served as
Chairman of the Accreditation and
CEA committees for two years and has
been an active member of the Finance,
By-laws, and Government Relations
committees. She was appointed under
three different governors to the New
Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists,
for which she filled either the position
of Vice-Chairman or Chairman in her
ten years of service to the State
of New Mexico. In 1994, she was granted
the designation of Nationally Certified
Cosmetology Examiner by the National
Interstate Council of State Boards
of Cosmetology, Inc. She was the first
educator in the United States to be
awarded the distinction of Skills
Assessor by the City and Guild of
London Institute and by NACCAS. The
Career Colleges and Schools of Texas
recognized Barnes in 1995 for her
Outstanding Service to the Proprietary
Sector of Education. She was also
the recipient of the AACS Outstanding
Person of the Year Award. In 1997,
she received a Special Recognition
Award for her contribution to cosmetology
education and an Award of Distinction
for her lifetime contribution to cosmetology
education. Her most recent recognition
is that of being selected by her peers
to receive the N. F. Cimaglia Award
in 2001 for her outstanding performance
and service to the cosmetology schools
of America.
Barnes is well known for her experience
and expertise in accreditation compliance.
During her tenure as a NACCAS Commissioner
she served one year as First Vice-Chairman
of the executive committee. Her other
accreditation experience includes
acting as a special evaluator for
on-site school evaluations, teaching
Accreditation and Default Management
Workshops, chairing the Educational
Quality and Compliance Committee and
serving on the Constitution and Procedures/Government
Relations Committee for NACCAS. In
addition she serves on the Cosmetology
Technical Committee for SkillsUSA.
Barnes also developed and wrote the
first ever comprehensive Course Management
Guide which accompanies Milady's Standard
Cosmetology, 2000 and 2004 editions.
Milady's Master Educator, also authored
by Barnes, was published in September,
2000 and is revolutionizing the training
of cosmetology educators everywhere.
In addition, she co-authored Milady's
Standard Study Guide, The Essential
Companion, 2002 and 2004 editions.
She is also a contributing author
to Milady's Standard Cosmetology which
was published in August of 2002. As
Director of The Career Institute,
she also teaches regional workshops
and Career Institute training seminars
for Thomson Milady Learning.
